Here is an overview of my action plan. I'm sure I will be revising this as I go through this process. Please view it and leave a comment.

Week 3 of action research
At Sweeny ISD we are undertaking a new focus on reading. My supervisor shared with me some data on our 10th grade ELA TAKS score from '09 - '10. Looking at the reading levels of the last year sophomore class showed any student with a lexile reading score below 1000 did not pass the ELA TAKS. Conversely those students who had a lexile reading score 1500 acheived commended performance. This data was eye opening and reinforced what we know about the importance of reading and how it relates to academic success. However, if we consider the students with a lexile reading score of 1500 to be college ready then we have work to do. There were only 20% of the students with commended performance. It will be interesting as we go through this year to keep track of the progress of the students and how the new reading programs will affect the students achievement.
Week 2 Of Action Research
Okay, my fellow bloggers I finally figured out how to post my next blog! I have staired at my home page and click on many different icons to no avail. Enough of about me being inept at this blogging gig. Back to my research.
In week two we had the opportunity to see and hear from three different administrators and their action research. What I gleaned from these different action research is the importance of using data to help one make a decision. Also, they stressed the importance of making the action research process a part of ones professional practice.
Also, I have chose to research the correlation between reading and a students' success. In the next blog I will share some data about reading levels and students' pass/fail status when it comes to a standardized test.

This quote by Juliet, from the play Romeo and Juliet, describes action research for me. Action research, practitioner research, practitioner inquiry, are all names used to describe the process of introspection of one's own practices. "Simply stated, practitioner inquiry is defined as systematic, intentional study of one's own professional practice." (Leading with passion and knowledge: The Principal as Action Research, Dana 9) It is the practice of reflecting back for the purpose of change. Action research is not a practice of investigation of knowledge from an outside source. It is a "man in the mirror" approach to one's own professional practices. It seeks to change what does not work. It allows, in the profession of principal, a practice of professional development that is practical and useful. This inquiry practice allows the principal to take an honest approach at what he or she does. It is like flying an airplane. If the pilot does not investigate the direction the plane is traveling then the possibility the plane of reaching the wrong destination is greater. The pilot must constantly investigate the direction the plane is going.
This type of research will be beneficial to an educator if it is put into practice. Just like anything else in life, if one does not practice the change of behavior nothing is ever changed.

By any other name would smell as sweet. "
